Legalities of marriage

Legal Status Of Celebrant-Led Weddings

Under current English and Welsh law, celebrant-led weddings and civil partnerships are not legally binding.

But there's an easy way to have your marriage or Civil Partnership legally recognised: A statutory ceremony at your local register office.

Once you've got that sorted, I can bring the fun stuff!

Statutory Ceremonies

A statutory ceremony is a simple, 'no frills' ceremony that fulfils the basic legal obligations. They're offered on weekdays in a simple office.  The cost of the ceremony is around £60-£80, plus a notice fee of around £80-£100. If you wish to give notice more than 12 months in advance, you can pay an additional fee to do this.

The couple attend with 2 witnesses, so it's sometimes called a '2+2' ceremony. Not all register offices will advertise this option widely, so make sure you ask specifically for a statutory ceremony when you enquire.
